As an essential component of coated abrasive tools, sand rolls are widely used in the market. The manufacturing process involves bonding abrasive grains to a cloth or paper backing, resulting in products that offer enhanced safety during workpiece polishing, superior precision, and lower grinding costs. All-resin‑bonded gauze rolls boast excellent wear resistance and heat tolerance, making them ideal for polishing stainless steel, sheet metal, and gold‑smithing applications, among others.

As an essential component of coated abrasives, sand rolls are widely used in the market. Since 2016, as the industrial structure has continued to adjust, the production of abrasive roll products in the coated abrasive industry has followed a trend of initial growth followed by a decline. In 2017, national abrasive roll output reached 222.563 million square meters, the highest level in recent years; however, output declined steadily over the subsequent two years. By 2019, China’s coated abrasive industry had produced 184.858 million square meters of abrasive rolls, bringing total output back below 200 million square meters.

In 2020, the downward trend in sand roll production within China’s coated abrasive industry eased, with total annual output reaching 197.863 million square meters, up 7.0% year on year.

From the perspective of production structure, unlike sandpaper, which is predominantly paper-based, China’s coated abrasive sand roll market currently features cloth‑backed products as the mainstay. According to statistics from the Coated Abrasives Branch of the China Machine Tool & Tool Association, in 2020, paper‑based sand roll production totaled 40.64 million square meters, accounting for 20.5% of total coated abrasive sand roll output, while cloth‑backed sand roll production reached 157 million square meters, representing 79.5% of the overall total.

At present, China has more than 50 manufacturers of coated abrasive tools and over 400 downstream product‑processing enterprises. In recent years, the industry’s level of concentration has increased to some extent, with leading firms in technology and management leveraging their superior products to capture a larger share of the market. Nevertheless, the prevailing situation—characterized by a large number of small, fragmented enterprises—has yet to be effectively addressed, leaving many companies still mired in the challenges of homogeneous competition.

According to statistics from the Abrasive Tools Branch of the China Machine Tool Industry Association, in 2019, the top three companies in China’s sand roll production were Jiangsu Mitsubishi, Jiangsu Fengmang, and Changzhou Jinniu. Notably, Jiangsu Fengmang surpassed Changzhou Jinniu to move into second place. Five companies produced more than 10 million square meters each, with a combined output of 1.409 billion square meters, accounting for 71.21% of the total reported sand roll production.
